Winter Smog Story Board

A series of pictures, with accompanying text, which explains how winter smog is formed.

Narrative:
Urban air pollution can occur in winter when there is a layer of cooler air covering a city,...
...and a layer of warmer, windless air above. This is called temperature inversion .
Very small particles of smoke and pollutants, mainly from domestic heating, are discharged into the air.
They are trapped under the inversion layer, and over two or three days of still conditions the concentration builds up.
The pollution particles are so small that even rain can't wash them out of the air - only wind can disperse them.
