What EPA does about litter from cars
In the 2006/07 financial year, 20,745 fines were issued across Victoria. Over the past five years the number of fines issued has increased by 155 per cent from the 8,142 fines issued in 2001/02.
“These results continue to reinforce our belief that the Victorian community does not support littering and will take action to stop this illegal activity,” said EPA Chairman Mick Bourke.
The vast majority, approximately 90 percent, of reports relate to cigarette butts. However food packaging, beverage containers and rubbish that is poorly secured to cars and trailers are also reported.
“The Litter Report Line provides an important avenue for the community to take action,” said Mr Bourke.
EPA is also helping Litter Enforcement Officers across the state to take action against litterers by developing a Litter Enforcement Toolkit.
The Toolkit, developed in conjunction with Litter Enforcement Officers from councils and Government agencies around the state is a practical resource for officers and local authorities who deal with litter issues.
“The toolkit provides advice and support and will promote a consistent and user-friendly approach to applying the litter provisions of the Environment Protection Act 1970 across the state,” said Mr Bourke.
“EPA wants to tackle litter as part of a state-wide team. We are working with a number of Government departments and agencies across Victoria to address the issue of litter,” said Mr Bourke.
Report litter thrown from any vehicle by recording the registration, make, colour, model, location, date and time, plus a description of the litter.
