What about water – is it calculated in the Ecological Footprint? (pages 12-13) (activity 3)
- Develop an effective and interesting way to present the information described in paragraph 2 to an audience. Information could be presented graphically (eg. as a pie or bar graph or creatively) (eg. using containers of water where 1 ml = 1000 km3 of water).
- ‘Although freshwater is not considered a scarce resource globally, much of it is geographically inaccessible or not available throughout the year.’ Explain what you think this statement means?
- Look at Figure 16. Which 3 countries use the most water per person?
- Where are they located and what do they use their water for?
- Are there any similarities between these three countries?
- Using the Water Stress legend find out which countries withdraw the most water compared to what is available to them and make a statement about these countries.
- Australia has the 13th largest water withdrawal volume per person, but according to the table we only use 5% of the water that is available. Why do you think then, that many parts of Australia are currently in drought?
- Look at Australia’s water withdrawal. Where do we use the greatest amount of water?
- List as many of the actions and products in your lifestyle that require water. (Hint: think about the food you eat as well)
