Landfills
It is very important that only certain types of waste are disposed of in landfills. EPA licensed landfills have special design features to reduce environmental impact. These landfills accept waste which cannot be disposed of using any of the preferred options.
EPA licensed landfills must have appropriate signage at the entrance to indicate what wastes may or may not be disposed of there. There are also areas set aside for recycling. The types of wastes which must be disposed of at EPA licensed landfills include:
- building and demolition material, including bricks, concrete, timber, glass, metals, bitumen, plastic and plaster board
- trees, shrubs and garden waste
- shredded tyres
- domestic garbage
- fruit, vegetables, supermarket and butcher's waste
- prescribed wastes such as contaminated soil
- asbestos.
