Blue dye spill prompts EPA action

22 Jun 2017

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is currently investigating the cause of a blue dye substance spill at UniGrain premises in Smeaton on Tuesday.

The dye has left the company site through their stormwater system and entered a minor tributary – located on a private property – of Birch Creek, causing the water to turn bright blue.

The spill has not made it to Birch Creek and EPA officers are currently onsite with UniGrain investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Clean-up of the waterway and drains is underway and eduction trucks are on site removing the liquid. This is expected to take several days to complete.

EPA will continue to monitor the site over the coming days and encourages community members who may be able to assist EPA to contact its pollution hotline on 1300 372 842 (1300 EPA VIC).
