HOW WE TACKLED CLIMATE CHANGE
'...we can influence improved community and environmental outcomes.'

Carbon innovators roundtable
We realised that other carbon neutral businesses would be encountering similar issues as we worked through our carbon neutral strategy, so we invited them to our Carbon Innovators Network roundtable to tackle these issues

What we did
We commissioned Kinesis to write a carbon neutral discussion paper that examined four policies that would have a significant effect on carbon neutral strategies.
We then identified 20 leading organisations with carbon neutral business commitments and invited them to our Carbon Innovators Network carbon neutral roundtable. A facilitator with significant experience in this field led the discussions.
As a result, we gained a greater understanding of how organisations are responding to proposed government policies and identified where we could assist businesses in adapting their carbon strategies.

We believe business is looking for leadership in the voluntary carbon management space and will value EPA’s contribution in the future because of this roundtable.

At Beechworth, in north-eastern Victoria, we held a Carbon Innovators Network event at La Trobe University to raise awareness in regional Victoria about climate change.

Dr Paul Tebo, former vice-president of safety, health and environment at Dupont, gave the keynote address. Dr Tebo helped move the company from being viewed as an environmental laggard to an environmental leader. His message to our regional audience was that business can flourish in a carbon constrained economy.

EPA licensees and regional business and industry leaders were able to learn first hand about the impact of climate change and we encouraged you to start thinking about strategic responses, bearing in mind that climate change is not just a risk, but a business opportunity as well. We were assisted by Regional Development Victoria (Wangaratta), the Wangaratta Rural City Council and the North East Catchment Management Authority.

What you said
“The Carbon Innovators Network roundtable was a great opportunity to openly discuss emerging greenhouse gas management issues. The discussions were engaging and refreshingly frank. I left the roundtable with a broader appreciation of the issues and optimism that by working together we can influence improved community and environmental outcomes.”
