This section provides the following information:

About EPA

EPA's challenging responsibility is to protect the quality of our air, water and land environment, and to control unwanted noise pollution. We meet this challenge through:

  • Environmental science
Scientific studies and investigations, leading-edge modelling, ambient monitoring and emissions auditing define the state of the Victorian environment and identify key environmental issues.

  • Policy development
Translating strategic information into legislation is the key to making a difference. EPA has been at the international forefront of innovative environmental policy for the past decade. It's a challenging activity for those who like to think laterally, to ask why and to try out something new.

  • Regional services
Rigorous engineering and scientific assessment is at the core of the pollution prevention program. Helping industry, land managers and agriculturists find sustainable solutions is our professional approach. Innovation, co-operation and a willingness to listen are important qualities. But sometimes our 'help' has to be a little forceful, and enforcement measures need to be applied – always jointly, always openly, always effectively.

  • Community involvement
EPA fosters environmental awareness in the community through the formation and participation of community environment groups. Improving local environmental performance at a local level is achieved a number of ways including active community participation in the development of Environment Improvement Plans.

  • Business management
We take pride in implementing our business management arrangements; from people management, business planning, financial management, information technology and information sharing and management.

  • International and national activities
EPA has been providing assistance to other countries for many years. More recently, to meet a rapidly-growing demand, we have established a special program to manage our overseas activities. Countries we have worked in include Indonesia, Japan, China and Thailand.

Underpinning all EPA's activities are the business support services such as finance and administration, information technology, legal services, customer services and human resources.

What you can do for EPA

People are the foundation of EPA's activities. We seek people with drive and enthusiasm, excellence, initiative, teamwork, problem-solving abilities, leadership, achievement, sensitivity and client orientation.

EPA is firmly scientific-based. More than half of our 400 people work in scientific and engineering roles. Opportunities range from chemists, chemical engineers, engineers, biologists, hydrogeologists and mathematical modellers to economists, policy analysts, lawyers and computer specialists.

Most EPA staff are based in Melbourne. We also have offices in Bendigo, Dandenong, Geelong, Traralgon and Wangaratta.

Many EPA staff regularly spend time in the field on investigative, community consultation, scientific research, enforcement and emergency response tasks.

What EPA can do for you

EPA takes pride in its friendly, healthy work environment. We practice equal opportunity, in smoke-free workplaces.

  • Training
We take training and development very seriously. An innovative in-house program provides technical and personal development training. Employees are encouraged and supported to continue formal academic training to build on their expertise.
  • Salary
The commencing salary for most positions is determined by the relevant qualifications and experience of the applicant, within a general range for the position. Non-executive positions are graded, for salary purposes, as Victorian Public Service (VPS) grades 1 to 6. There is an annual performance-based salary review.
  • Career, Performance & Progression System (CPPS)
This program is designed to reward staff on their performance and ability. It also provides the opportunity to determine ongoing skills development needs and career planning.
  • Leave
As well as a four-week annual leave, there's a special needs-based leave system for family and personal emergencies.
  • Flexibility
Negotiating working hours and leave arrangements.
  • Superannuation
A competitive superannuation scheme is available to all EPA employees.
