Procedure: Train Staff
Introduction
It is obvious that the actions of winery staff are very important in overall environmental performance and implementation of the EMS. Of particular importance is their role in areas such as operation of effluent treatment plants, product loss prevention, waste segregation and management of incidents. It is also clear that, even though everyone has a role to play in improving performance, some staff affect environmental performance more than others do.
Staff involvement is critical to the success of the EMS (and the cleaner production) implementation. This involvement will motivate staff to contribute ideas and later adopt new/changed practices resulting from this work. The training they receive will initiate and then underpin this involvement.
Inadequate awareness or training of staff is a common cause of legal non-compliances, accidents and pollution incidents. Educating staff about environmental risks and legal obligations can contribute to significant improvements.
Procedure
Step 1: Which Roles need Training?
The first level of training that should be given in your winery should be aimed at general environmental awareness. This should be given to all current staff and all new staff.
For many staff, initial environmental awareness along with an overview of the EMS and the Cleaner Production Program will be sufficient. Staff involved with specific production activities which create waste or have the potential for legal noncompliances will require more specific training in order to effectively undertake these activities.
Make a list of all roles which need specific training.
Step 2: What Training is Needed?
The linked training checklists can be used as an aid to identify areas of training or education that may be needed.
Prepare a training plan for appropriate roles. The linked plan may serve as a starting point – add any further areas of training needed specifically at your winery. When preparing training for staff, consider if environmental training should be extended to any contractors or suppliers.
Assess the current competencies of the staff members selected in the previous step against the appropriate training plan. Personalise the training plan for each staff member needed additional environmental training. Also develop a training schedule and incorporate dates into each personal training plan.
Step 3: Prepare Training Material
Prepare appropriate training materials for awareness training and specific training as needed. If external resources are to be used for training, these should be organised at this stage.
Step 4: Implement Training Plans
Implement awareness training and personal training plans. Create records of completed training for each staff member and keep these as auditable evidence of the competency of staff.
Step 5: Periodic Review
Periodically review staff and contractor training programs and progress against personal training plans.
