Australasian advisory committees
A key initiative under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between EPA and UNEP, is to coordinate advisory committees. Each committee involves financial institution representatives who meet to discuss relevant issues and work together to progress action towards sustainable finance activities and programs in Australasia.
There are three advisory committees in Australia and they are:
- Environmental credit risk assessment
- Insurance
- Operational management and reporting
Environmental Credit Risk Assessment Advisory Committee
This advisory committee was established in 2001 and works on issues facing those within financial institutions who assess credit risk. Discussion topics include, for example, the assessment of environmental credit risk from a rural perspective, the inclusion of environmental and social indicators in project finance decision-making and climate change as a risk and opportunity within the lending business.
Insurance Advisory Committee
The Insurance Advisory Committee coordinated research that explored environmental risk management and the role of the insurance industry in Australia. The paper raises awareness about:
- the tools that are used to deal with and manage environmental risk within companies and that highlight the demand for and supply of environmental insurance products
- how environmental risk factors can be used to price general insurance products for both individuals and business and promote the use of insurance as a tool to encourage a more environmentally sustainable future.

Operational Environmental Management and Reporting Advisory Committee
This advisory committee examines issues that relate to a financial institution's direct and indirect operational environmental footprint, such as the energy and water use of its business, as well as of its suppliers, and also issues relating to public environment and sustainability reporting.
