On 10 December 2002, the former Deputy Premier and EPA's former Minister John Thwaites joined National Australia Bank's CEO Frank Cicutto at a signing ceremony to mark the National becoming a member of the UNEP FI.

The ceremony took place near the National's new 'green' office headquarters at Docklands, in Victoria.

The National joined signatories worldwide who have committed to the program that ensures they regard sustainable development as a fundamental aspect of sound business management.

"Having Australia's largest financial institution on board is a really positive sign and sends a strong message to corporate Australia about the value of sustainability," EPA Chairman Mick Bourke said.

Speaking at the ceremony, Frank Cicutto said that "at the National, we see sustainable development as not running down assets, broadly defined to include ecological assets, to meet short-term needs. It is the sort of approach a well-managed business takes and is consistent with the objective of long-term value creation. That is why we were happy to sign the UNEP statement."
