EPA and the Victorian Employers' Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI) signed a voluntary sustainability covenant on 5 July 2006. Launched at European automotive manufacturer Redmond Repetition Engineers in Hoppers Crossing, a leading example of resource efficient manufacturing. The covenant falls under section 49AA of the Environment Protection Act 1970.

VECCI is Victoria's largest multi-industry employers' body servicing the needs of around 25,000 businesses across the State. It is a major facilitator of government services to business and leading education and professional training provider to its members. VECCI has established operations supporting international trade, regional representation and industry best practice.

This sustainability covenant is a public commitment by VECCI and EPA to work together to protect the environment and to contribute to a more sustainable Victoria. The Victorian government has allocated $3 million to the partnership to develop a new initiative designed to assist small and medium-sized businesses in Victoria to improve profitability and the environment at the same time.

The Grow Me The Money initiative gives time-poor businesses programs and tools to help them use materials, water, energy and other resources more efficiently. The program will provide businesses with access to a comprehensive web portal, a telephone helpline and a rewards and recognition program.

EPA Victoria chairman Mick Bourke said "Organisations like EPA and VECCI have a clear responsibility to support industry in their efforts to operate more sustainably and our partnership with VECCI means the programs and resources will be available to tens of thousands of Victorian businesses."

VECCI's CEO Mr Neil Coulson complimented the Victorian State Government on its investment in the partnership and not-for-profit program. "This program will succeed because it delivers simple, workable solutions for the resource efficiency, and offers the chance for business to improve their profits."
