Building sites and stormwater

Council stormwater management plans (SWMPs) have identified building sites as significant sources of pollution to the stormwater system. Increasing building activity over recent years, particularly in Melbourne (both as in-fill and in growth areas), has had a significant negative impact on stormwater quality.

In order to minimise discharge of sediments and other pollutants to stormwater systems and waterways, the construction activities associated with land development should follow best practice guidelines. These include:

In general terms, minor cases of illegal dumping of wastes and rubbish in stormwater drains and waterways should be reported to your local councils. Major cases of illegal dumping of wastes and rubbish in stormwater drains and waterways, and spills and slicks in waterways need to be reported to EPA’s pollution hotline.
