Anglesea River Barwon Water Sewer Spill
EPA puts monitoring requirements on Barwon Water
EPA Victoria has required Barwon Region Water Corporation to monitor wastewater during the commissioning of a sewer pipeline, to ensure no overflow into Anglesea River, as well as monitoring noise, odour and dust during the project.
The temporary by-pass sewer pipeline is being installed following a sewer spill into the Anglesea River in August 2011, which was caused by a broken pipeline. At the time of the incident, about 400KL of reclaimed water and between 40-60KL of sewage was released into the River. Given the high flows throughout the catchment at the time, the environmental impacts were minimal.
The requirements have been issued in a minor works pollution abatement notice. Notices such as these are used to remedy situations where there is actual pollution or potential for pollution. A notice often requires a company or individual to implement works or undertake monitoring. The bulk of the requirements relate to the construction phase of the by-pass sewer pipeline. A copy of the notice can be found here.
