In response to the significant environmental impacts of poorly designed and managed underground petroleum storage systems (UPSS), EPA has released important guidelines, designed to minimise the risks associated with such systems.
These guidelines provide practical guidance for owners/operators of UPSS on protecting people, property and the environment. The purpose of the guidelines is to provide owners and operators of UPSS with a key point of reference on design, installation and management aspects of both new and existing UPSS.
In seeking to comply with their statutory duties, occupiers/operators of UPSS are expected to implement the measures set out in this document or be able to demonstrate that any alternative approach achieves an equivalent or higher level of performance about the protection of people, property and the environment.
The guidelines have been developed by EPA in close consultation with WorkSafe Victoria, Australian Institute of Petroleum (AIP), Australian Petroleum Agents & Distributors Association (APADA), Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC) and the Petroleum Industry Contractors Association (PICA).
