What EPA does about litter from cars

EPA’s public litter reporting program was the first program of its type in Australia. It allows members of the public to report those who they see littering from motor vehicles to EPA.

In the 2008/09 financial year, 19,465 fines were issued across Victoria.

EPA Executive Director Environmental Services, Bruce Dawson said the number of fines issued in the last financial year reinforces EPA’s belief that the Victorian community does not support littering and will take action to stop this illegal activity.

“Being able to report a litterer is an important way for the community to get involved and help tackle the problem of littering.

“Since the program commenced, more than 200,000 infringement notices have been issued by EPA.

“Each year we find that around 90 per cent of reports relate to tossing cigarette butts from vehicles. These are lit and unlit cigarette butts. However food packaging, drink containers and poorly secured rubbish are also reported,” Mr Dawson said.

Fines for littering from a motor vehicle are up to $234 for an infringement notice or a maximum of $4673 in court.
