Brooklyn air monitoring results for January and February 2015

One day exceeded the PM10 air quality objective in Brooklyn during January and February.

Observations on the air monitoring results

The results for January and February are significantly better than for the same period last year, when there were 13 days that exceeded the objective. The positive early results for 2015 have continued the trend of air quality improvements – relative to recent years – that have been recorded in Brooklyn since the middle of February 2014.

PM10 levels have only exceeded the daily air quality objective once in Brooklyn so far during 2015, which happened on Saturday 3 January. The worst air quality in Brooklyn on this day occurred between 2 and 3 am and was associated with very strong winds that also caused very poor air quality to be recorded right across Melbourne at the same time. This was only the fourth weekend day when the PM10 air quality objective has been exceeded in Brooklyn since monitoring began in the suburb in late October 2009, indicating the conditions leading to the very poor air quality on this day were quite rare.

Despite the pleasing start to the year, it is important to note that there were fewer dry weekdays with northerly winds during January and February 2015 than during those months in each of the previous five years when air quality has been monitored in Brooklyn. This is significant because those are the weather conditions that facilitate the transport of PM10 from the Brooklyn Industrial Precinct to the neighbouring residential area to the south. Based on the weather conditions recorded during January and February, it was not unusual that Brooklyn’s air quality was better than in the same months of recent years.
