Brooklyn air monitoring results for July and August 2015

No days exceeded the PM10 air quality objective in Brooklyn during July and August.

Observations

No days exceeded the PM10 air quality objective in Brooklyn during July and August 2015, which means that four consecutive months have passed since the last day (13 April) when the PM10 air quality objective was exceeded in Brooklyn. This is the first time the PM10 air quality objective has not been exceeded in Brooklyn for four consecutive months since EPA began monitoring air quality in the suburb during 2009.

The results for 2015 so far show the number of days exceeding the PM10 objective has reduced by approximately 60 per cent from the average of all other monitoring years. 2011 is the only year that comes close to matching 2015 in terms of fewer days exceeding the PM10 air quality objective in Brooklyn, but there was twice as much rainfall to help suppress the dust in 2011.

Despite the promising recent results in May, June, July and August, seven days have still exceeded the PM10 air quality objective in Brooklyn so far in 2015, which is twice as many as anywhere else monitored by EPA Victoria and shows that more needs to be done to improve the local air quality. Work being carried out to seal two dusty roads in the Brooklyn Industrial Precinct are well under way and the completion of these works is expected to lead to further improvements in Brooklyn’s air quality.
