Industrial waste treatment: A path to reuse of prescribed industrial wastes

EPA has appointed the Australian Sustainable Industry Research Centre (ASIRC) to launch a two-year project working with a few key waste treatment companies.

The project will provide substantial funding to support the development of alternative management options for avoiding, reusing, recycling and recovering prescribed industrial waste (PIW) and will deliver significant PIW to landfill reductions.

The benefits to participating waste treatment companies are expected to include:

  • access to innovative, new options and technologies for waste avoidance and reuse
  • access to new markets for products made from wastes previously sent to landfill
  • financial benefits from new products, and avoiding landfill costs and associated levies.

The initial response of Victoria's key waste treaters to the announcement of this project has been very positive, and EPA expects to announce the participation of several companies shortly.
