Seafood Processing Waste Forum connects issues with solutions
OUTCOMES:
- Over two-thirds of the seafood processing waste has now been diverted from landfill.
- Research and development is under way for solutions for the remaining one third.
- Around 2,700 tonnes per annum of greenhouse gases have been reduced from improved waste management practices.

Attendees to the Seafood Processing Waste Forum held at Skilled Stadium, Kardinia Park, Friday 3rd August 2007, left the event with an overwhelmingly positive attitude. Over thirty people participated in an interactive afternoon where seafood processors in the southwest region of Victoria connected with solution providers capable of reusing or recycling fish, squid and scallop shell waste. This optimism was justified as over two thirds of processing waste produced by attendees has now been diverted from landfill.

The purpose of the forum was to assist towards the reduction of seafood processing waste disposed to landfill. It was estimated 5,000 tonnes went to landfill each year with a cost of disposal estimated at $650,000 per annum.
EPA Victoria hosted the event in partnership with the Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI), the Grow Me The Money program and the Victorian Waste Management Association (VWMA).
Presenters at the event included Natural Recovery Systems, Fishwell Consulting, BiobiN Technologies Pty Ltd, Pridhams, Department of Primary Industries, Barwon Regional Waste Management Group and VECCI. Solutions presented on the day included composting, rendering and fertilizer production.
The event is one of a number of initiatives being driven by EPA to assist companies to both reduce their prescribed industrial waste to landfill whilst simultaneously reducing business costs.
