Publication Profile
Maintaining water sensitive urban design elements
One of the barriers to greater adoption of water sensitive urban design (WSUD) for stormwater treatment is uncertainty about the maintenance that will be needed after construction. EPA’s new manual “Maintaining water sensitive urban design elements” is designed to give council staff and developers the information to help plan, cost and schedule for WSUD.
WSUD elements can harvest, treat and store stormwater, saving drinking water and reducing pollutants in urban stormwater runoff. WSUD elements can be designed to manage and treat stormwater in a wide range of urban situations, from individual allotments to whole neighbourhoods.
The manual describes the maintenance methods used in Australia and overseas for the most commonly used WSUD elements, and spells out what to look out for on site for each element. It also provides checklists that can be used on site and kept as records of the work needed and carried out.
