Latest litter blitz

Your call could stop a litterer - 1800 Litter

EPA has embarked on a blitz against litter with a new campaign encouraging the community to take action against litterers.

The advertising campaign, running throughout metropolitan and regional Victoria, promotes EPA’s unique litter reporting program that allows you to report people littering from motor vehicles.

“Building on the success of last year's 'You're gunna get stung' advertising, our latest campaign aims to change community attitudes to reporting litterers. We want to make reporting litterers a practice that Victorians are proud of,” said EPA Chairman Mick Bourke.

Litter impacts on communities in a number of ways. It generates unsightly visual pollution and it impacts on the environment by damaging waterways and harming animal and marine life.

“EPA’s Litter Report Line is a simple way for the community to get involved and help tackle the problem of littering,” Mr Bourke said.

“For over 10 years, EPA has encouraged members of the community to report people who they see littering from motor vehicles.

“In the last financial year, over 20,000 fines were issued across Victoria and through this new campaign we hope to increase the number of Victorians who regularly report litter using our phone and web litter reporting channels.”

As part of the program and to make it easier for people to report littering, EPA has changed the Litter Report Line number to 1800 LITTER (1800 548 837) and now has a new web address - www.reportlitter.com.au external site link

The advertising blitz involves metropolitan and regional radio, suburban and regional press and billboard advertising across the State.

Who’s A Tosser?

Who’s A Tosser?July 1, 2008, marks Victoria’s first year anniversary of the ban on indoor smoking at licensed venues as well the first anniversary for Sustainability Victoria’s ‘Don’t Be A Tosser’ campaign.

Thanks to the hard work that licensed premises, local government and smokers put into supporting this campaign, butt litter has almost halved since the state-wide bans on indoor smoking at pubs and clubs were introduced last year!

Before the change in legislation butt littering behaviour rates were at 58% and were forecast to increase to 80% if no action was taken. However, thanks to everyone getting behind the Tosser campaign, butt littering fell to just 33% at the peak of the campaign in August 2007.
