International Polar Year, World Environment Day and National Science Week
2007 has been designated International Polar Year, World Environment Day 2007 - Theme 'Melting Ice - A Hot Topic?' and National Science Week (18-26 August) - Theme Antarctic Science. These themes all focus attention on issues of climate change and global warming.
Things to do in the classroom
Find out what will happen when land ice melts and when sea ice melts on the official International Polar Year website.
Debate the issue, 'Should tourism be allowed in Antartica?' (to help with your debate planning go to the International Polar Year website and type in the Search box 'debate tourism')
View spectacular photos of icebergs and landscapes of Antartica at Classroom Antarctica.
Watch the Antarctic film 'March of the Penguins' (as told by Morgan Freeman)
Play the 'Penguin Parade' game.
Think about different aspects of climate change and how it would affect you and your local environment. For example:
- Rising sea levels
- More rainfall
- Less rainfall
- Higher temperatures
- Lower temperatures
- Higher wind speeds
- Lower wind speeds.
