How many kilograms of greenhouse gas are produced? (activity 6)
Energy consumption has a direct effect on global warming
When greenhouse gases are emitted they trap heat in the atmosphere leading to warming of our atmosphere.
We can calculate the amount of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide) that are emitted as a result of electricity use in the classroom (lighting and appliances).
To find out the amount of greenhouse gases emitted in your class and or school, follow activity 2c on page 10 of the Save Energy at School primary student workbook for Curriculum and Standards Framework (CSF) levels 3 and 4.
Complete the table.
About 1.4 kilograms of greenhouse gases are emitted for every kilowatt hour of electricity used (from page 27 of the Save Energy at School primary student workbook for CSF levels 3 and 4).
To calculate the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by electricity used in your class, multiply the total kilowatt hour (kWh) figure at the bottom of the table by 1.4
How could your class reduce greenhouse gas emissions? Design prompts or signage to remind people to turn off lights and appliances in your classroom (don't forget 'standby' mode).
