Update
All major infrastructure works on the landfill are now complete. The site will require regular maintenance for many years to ensure its gas and leachate extraction systems operate effectively .
On 8 December 2010 EPA issued the City of Casey with an updated Pollution Abatement Notice. The notice requires Council to take all practicable steps to reduce the residual landfill gas in the Brookland Greens Estate and manage the landfill to prevent any future environmental impacts and to address the residual gas that has migrated from the site, a copy of the notice can be found below.

Settlement Reached
In March 2011 a settlement was reached in the Brookland Greens class action between City of Casey, EPA Victoria and residents of the Brookland Greens estate.
EPA is pleased that those residents who were affected have been compensated. The settlement now needs to be approved by the courts.
There is still legal action pending regarding this matter and EPA is not in a position to provide further comment at this time.
Background
The Stevensons Road landfill operated between June 1996 and June 2005 as a municipal tip for the Casey and Frankston Councils – it is owned by the City of Casey.
In 2008, unsafe levels of methane gas emanating from the closed Stevensons Road landfill at Cranbourne were detected. Methane gas comes from the breakdown of waste within the landfill. The levels were found to be affecting residents in the nearby Brookland Greens estate.
A range of actions have been undertaken by the City of Casey mitigate any future risk at the site including construction of a deep trench wall, substantial upgrades to the gas and leachate extraction system and a new engineered landfill cap.
EPA continues to monitor the site and ensure the status of environmental issues for the Stevensons Road Closed Landfill.
In October 2009, the Victorian Ombudsman released a report on the incident: Brookland Greens Estate – Investigation into methane gas leaks.
EPA actively assisted in the Ombudsman’s enquiry and accepted all of the recommendations made in the report. These are in the process of being implemented.
