Water related Acts

EPA administers the Environment Protection Act 1970, which provides the basis for protecting our water environments from pollution.

The Act specifies that individuals and organisations can not pollute water environments, so that water is safe for humans, animals and plants, and suitable for other important uses and values, such as swimming, drinking and water for various industries.

EPA also administers more specific laws to protect water environments including the Pollution of Waters by Oil and Noxious Substances Act 1986, which deals with waste such as oil, chemicals and litter from ships.

There are other environmental laws aimed at managing the water environment and activities that may impact on it. These include:

  • Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994
  • Coastal Management Act 1995
  • Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988
  • Marine Act 1988
  • Water (Irrigation Farm Dams) Act 2002
  • National Parks Act 1975
  • Water Act 1989
  • Planning and Environment Act 1987
  • Fisheries Act 1995.

All these Acts are available online at the Victorian Law Today Library. Hard copies (paper) are available from the Information Victoria Bookshop.
