Assessment and clean up of the Whitehall Street industrial sites

EPA continues to require clean up of historical contamination in the Whitehall Street industrial precinct to reduce the impact of these premises on the surrounding environment.

EPA has issued Clean Up Notices on the following companies:

  • Port of Melbourne Corporation;
  • Albright and Wilson;
  • Orica; and
  • Mobil Oil Australia.

The notices require the completion of individual statutory environmental audits which will provide a detailed assessment of contamination at each premises, together with a plan for clean up. Clean up has already commenced on some of the sites.

The use of contaminated fill to reclaim land and historic waste disposal and management practices are a legacy of our industrial past, and one that needs to be managed carefully into the future. Clean up of sites of this kind often take many years.

This assessment and clean up work will also be informed by the findings and recommendations of the Environmental Audit of Whitehall Street Yarraville Precinct (Nadebaum 2006).
