Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is holding two information sessions in January regarding a works approval application for a proposed lead acid battery recycling facility in Hazelwood North.   

EPA has received a development proposal from Chunxing seeking to process 50,000 tonnes per year of used lead acid batteries, to be recycled into 28,000 tonnes of refined lead per year. The proposal estimates 98 per cent of the lead, plastic and electrolyte (sulfuric acid) in batteries will be recycled.

The proposed facility, to be located at Crown Allotment 2047, Fourth Road, Hazelwood North, intends to operate 24 hours - 7 days per week with allowance for 30-40 days of maintenance per year.

The public information sessions form part of the consultation process and submissions can be made until 31 January.

“Due to the holiday season and the high level of local interest, EPA has also more than doubled the consultation period days to 52 days to give people more opportunities to participate,” said EPA Gippsland Regional Manager Jessica Bandiera.

Works Approvals are issued by EPA under the Environment Protection Act 1970. They are required for industrial and waste management activities that have the potential for significant environmental impact.

A Works Approval permits plant and equipment to be installed, the operation of which will result in one or more of:
the discharge of waste to the environment
an increase in, or alteration to, an existing discharge
a change in the way waste is treated or stored.
