This report presents the results of air quality monitoring in Victoria and assesses them against the requirements of the Ambient Air Quality National Environment Protection Measure (AAQ NEPM). EPA also produces an annual air quality summary and data tables on its website.The major impacts on Victoria’s air quality in 2009 came from smoke from bushfires, planned burning, dust storms and local dust. These non-urban events led to a relatively high number of days when the particles standards were not met. Accumulation of combustion particles from urban sources in calm, highly stable air also resulted in days when the particle standards were not met. Under typical summer smog formation conditions, the four hour ozone standard was not met at one station in Melbourne on two days. At all other times, Victoria’s air quality was generally good.
