This interim position statement was developed to outline EPA’s position on per-and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS). It also provided guidance on EPA’s approach to the assessment and management of PFAS sources and how to approach potential contamination. 

EPA has developed a legislative instrument called a designation under the EP Act 2017, which sets the threshold at which PFAS contaminated soil can be used as fill material, consistent with EPA’s Interim position statement on PFAS. The designation is a fixed term regulatory tool that will allow industry to self-assess waste soil against the thresholds in the instrument.

It has been developed as a fixed term regulatory tool until 31 December 2024 which allows time to undertake more scientific assessment to ensure the thresholds continue to convey the best available science on the impact of PFAS contamination in soil.

This document is no longer used by EPA to regulate PFAS and is retained only as a historic reference. Fill material containing PFAS is now regulated under the PFAS fill general designation.
