Landfills provide an important service to industry and the community. If poorly managed they can cause issues for those living in the surrounding areas.

Landfill issues can include:

  • release of odours
  • landfill gas from closed landfills
  • pollution of groundwater.

EPA works to ensure landfills are well managed. This work can include reviews of how we approve licences for landfills. EPA has introduced stricter requirements for the licence approvals process. This makes sure that landfills are suitable for the wastes they receive, such as asbestos.
