As an independent statutory authority under the Environment Protection Act 2017 (the Act), our role is to prevent and reduce harm from pollution and waste.

This policy explains how EPA uses sanctions to constructively improve environmental outcomes. It sets out the range of EPA’s sanction powers, starting from an official warning through to criminal prosecution, and includes how EPA decides which sanction to pursue.
