New laws intended to come into effect from 1 July 2021 in Victoria are designed to prevent and reduce harm from pollution and waste, including circumstances where this has caused contamination of land and groundwater.

This publication provides information on how EPA defines contaminated land, and the principles and standards EPA regards as applicable to the identification of contaminated land. Duty holders and their advisors can use this guidance to help determine whether land in a particular location falls within the definition of contaminated land under the Act.
