A waste tyre company in Craigieburn has been fined $5,000 and its director a further $1,000 for failing to obtain a licence to store more than 11,000 tyres (equivalent passenger units) and not using the required EPA Waste Tracker system that ensures reportable priority waste is going to the appropriate destinations.
BMB Tyre Traders Pty Ltd and Director Brian Fitzgerald faced Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on 7 October. BMB and Mr Fitzgerald will also each pay EPA’s $1,387.50 in costs.
BMB was storing 11,350 EPU (equivalent passenger units) of waste tyres at a warehouse in Craigieburn without holding an operating licence. They also failed to record and provide prescribed transaction details on EPA’s Waste Tracker system in connection with reportable priority waste, in this case waste tyres.
The company has since sought and been granted the appropriate permission to store waste tyres.
“Waste tyres can pose a major environmental risk, so it is vital that those in the industry involved with waste tyre storage, transportation and disposal, operate with the required regulatory oversight,” said EPA North Metropolitan Regional Manager Chloe Bernett.
“Use of EPA Waste Tracker is not optional. It is the technology used by EPA to make sure waste is appropriately managed from creation and transportation to disposal.”
