EPA Victoria officers have identified a farm west of Geelong as the source of odour complaints over recent days.
It is understood that organic products such as chicken manure were applied to the farm earlier this week. EPA is investigating to see if further action is required.
The odour is not believed to be related to a February incident involving the spreading of manure on farms around Geelong and Surf Coast.
EPA South West Regional Manager Martha-Rose Loughnane said the odour would start to dissipate in coming days. In the meantime, people affected by it should keep their windows and doors closed.
Ms Loughnane thanked community members for their timely reporting, which helped officers track down the source of the smells.
“The public are our eyes, ears and nose,” she said. “If you smell something you shouldn’t, get in touch with us via our 24/7 hotline or through our online portal.”
