As Victoria's environmental regulator, it is EPA's job to reduce the impacts from pollution and waste on human health and the environment. We hold polluters to account by enforcing the Environment Protection Act 1970.

At the Ravenhall landfill, we:

  • inspect the site at least every month, and more often if needed
  • check for odour from the landfill when our officers are in the area
  • start our rapid response program if there is a spike in reports from the site.

Our investigations show that the Ravenhall landfill is generally well managed. We will continue to monitor the site to ensure that it complies with its licence.

Enforcement action at Ravenhall landfill

EPA has issued Cleanaway with pollution abatement notices (PANs). A PAN is a legal notice requiring the person responsible to manage potential environmental risk.

EPA has issued a PAN to Cleanaway to address leachate levels at the landfill. Leachate is a liquid formed from rainwater and decomposing waste. This has required major work at the site, which must be complete by November 2020.

EPA issued an infringement notice to Cleanaway in October 2018. The infringement notice was for allowing the wind to blow litter off the landfill into the surrounding area.
