| Type of offence or contravention | Fail to comply with an Improvement Notice at Dandenong on 29 August 2024, contrary to s.286(1). |
| Background of offence or contravention | Urban Mining Industries Pty Ltd operated a bread recycling, processing and plastic sorting facility in Dandenong. Following EPA inspections in January and August 2024, EPA identified that combustible recyclable and waste materials were being stored in large stockpiles without adequate fire risk controls. Despite an Improvement Notice requiring the company to minimise fire risk, a subsequent inspection found substantial stockpiles remained largely unchanged and did not meet required separation and storage standards, creating a risk that any fire could spread to nearby stockpiles and adjoining buildings. EPA's investigation also found no evidence that waste had been removed from the site during the compliance period. The premises was later vacated, and a September 2024 inspection confirmed that all waste and equipment had been removed. |
