The Metro Tunnel project (the project) is a State Government project that will free up space in the City Loop. A new tunnel under the city will allow more trains to run to and from the suburbs. Rail Projects Victoria is overseeing the project. 

The project contractors will build two, nine-kilometre rail tunnels, and five new underground rail stations. The project will also upgrade the Domain Interchange to a train and tram interchange. 

The tunnels run from the west of the city to the south east of the city.  

The project has been underway for five years and is due for completion in 2025.
