EPA Victoria and Hume City Council are working together to put a stop to illegal waste dumping and burning at a Wildwood property.
Following two major joint inspections in April and May 2026, the occupier of the Wildwood Road property has been ordered to immediately stop accepting and burning industrial waste.
During an inspection on 26 May, EPA authorised officers observed large quantities of smoldering industrial waste and dozens of trucks delivering soil to the property.
In a previous inspection on 14 April, EPA observed numerous large stockpiles of industrial waste, some of them containing fragments of asbestos.
“This site is in no way licensed by EPA to accept industrial waste, let alone asbestos,” EPA North Metropolitan Regional Manager Steve Riley said. “Accepting and burning this material is clearly illegal and an unacceptable risk to the environment and the surrounding community.”
During the latest inspection, EPA officers served the occupant of the site with an Environmental Action Notice to immediately cease burning waste. He must also take the industrial waste already on site to a lawful place by 28 July 2026, and have a qualified hygienist verify that all asbestos has been removed by 3 August.
Illegal waste management including transport and dumping, burning waste and non-compliance with EPA regulatory notices are serious offences that can attract significant penalties for individuals and corporations.
Hume City Mayor Cr Carly Moore said residents expected clean, safe neighbourhoods and the council was working hard to deliver that.
“Council is working alongside EPA Victoria to respond to this matter and ensure the safety of our community," Cr Moore said.
"Illegal waste activity poses serious risks to public health and the environment, and we are taking a coordinated approach to address it."
Mr Riley said EPA and other agencies’ investigations into the site were continuing.
“Waste dumping is a crime. The new Illegal Waste Dumping Taskforce(opens in a new window) , is tackling illegal waste dumping on public land, also takes an interest because of the high likelihood that those willing to illegally dump waste on private land will do it anywhere.
“Given the serious nature of this situation, our inquiries are continuing, and further enforcement action is still possible.”
