Victorian landfill register

The Victorian landfill register is a list of current landfills and known closed landfills in Victoria.

The Victorian landfill register is a listing of current landfills and known closed landfills in Victoria up until July 2021. This information comes from:

  • EPA landfill licences and previous post-closure pollution abatement notices
  • historical local council records
  • historical landfill records held by us.

You can find information and data up until 1 July 2021 – where available – on:

  • the type and volume of waste accepted at each landfill
  • the year of the landfill's closure.

We update the landfill register when:

  • we receive sufficient historical information about a former landfill
  • a new landfill is licensed.

If you're looking for landfills that are currently accepting waste, contact your local council(opens in a new window).

Access the register

Information from the Victorian landfill register is available on Victoria Unearthed(opens in a new window).

Victoria Unearthed is an online tool managed by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action(opens in a new window). It provides information about potential and existing contamination across the state.

If you need assistance, contact us. We can post a map to you or arrange for you to visit an EPA office and view the Victorian landfill register.

Data points on the map represent individual records. Click on each data point to reveal information for that record. Not all fields have information. Where there's no information, the field displays 'Not available'.

See below for a description of each information field.

These numbers are linked to an EPA licence or pollution abatement notice. 'Not available' indicates that the source of the record is not the EPA – for example, it may be from a local government record.

About the data

The register is built from unique records. Some landfill sites have overlapping data points, representing multiple unique records.

The register does not capture all possible historical landfill sites. We have included the locations of landfills where we have a moderate or high level of confidence in the records. We do not include potential historical sites where we have lower confidence in the information.

When we have confidence in our historical records, we do not look for external verification. Otherwise, we contact local councils and shires to verify our records. They also provide any additional information they have on landfills.

We make extensive efforts to verify information. However, there are limitations to the dataset:

  • Some addresses are estimates. Some older landfill records do not have good information on landfill locations or the site boundaries. Those sites are still included where possible, with the best available information.
  • Not all landfill records have an address. These landfills are not included on the map.
  • Some details are missing on some records. The information provided is everything we have for that record.
  • The site area marked as a landfill on the map represents the whole site that was subject to an EPA licence or remedial notice or was recorded as a landfill. The area where waste is deposited only occupies part of the site.
  • Some landfills will have many points, plus a polygon. Each has different types of information. Click on all of these points and the polygon to see all of the information held about a site.
  • The register does not capture all possible historical landfill sites. Many landfills are undocumented, such as those on private property. They can be included when we have sufficient information about them.

Any information contained in the Victorian landfill register is guidance. Do not rely upon it as being either complete or accurate. We do not verify the accuracy of all information. Make your own enquires with relevant authorities about a particular:

  • piece of land
  • location
  • site or property.

We do not accept any responsibility for any claims, loss or damage of any kind whatsoever arising out of any person’s reliance on any information that either:

  • is contained in or omitted from the Victorian landfill register
  • arises out of the inclusion or exclusion of any land, location, site or property on the Victorian landfill register.

If your property is on the register

If your property is on the register, you do not need to do anything unless:

  • you have additional information about your property
  • you believe there's an error.

Information about ownership of properties on the register comes from LANDATA(opens in a new window). This is a Victorian Government website that provides public access to title and property information.

If you have additional information about your property, email landfills@epa.vic.gov.au or contact us.

If you believe your property is listed on the Victorian Landfill Register in error, you can email landfills@epa.vic.gov.au or contact us to discuss your concerns.

To request a change, you need documents that show the error in our landfill records – for example:

  • an audit report for the site
  • aerial photographs showing the site history
  • records showing a history of use that would preclude the site having been used as a landfill.

We:

  • assess the documents provided as evidence of an error
  • review the confidence and accuracy of the source record of the landfill
  • seek more information if we need to, such as council and planning records
  • consider all the available information and decide whether to remove the site from the register.

It may take up to 4 weeks to complete our assessment. Your property stays on the register until our assessment is complete.

Environmental audits can be conducted to assess the risks of closed landfill sites. You can find out if an environmental audit has been conducted on your property by contacting us.
