Noisy vehicle reports can be made by members of Victoria Police or EPA officers. If your vehicle is reported for being noisy, EPA may send you a legal notice requiring you to get it tested.
We call this a ‘vehicle test notice’.
To book a noise test for your vehicle, phone an approved vehicle noise tester.

Paying for vehicle noise tests
A vehicle noise test fee is payable directly to the approved motor vehicle noise tester, not to EPA.
Note that the vehicle noise test fee does not include the cost of any repairs that your vehicle may need.
What happens after the vehicle noise test
If your vehicle complies with noise laws
If your vehicle complies with the law on vehicle noise, the tester will give you a certificate of compliance.
We won’t refund the test cost if your vehicle does comply with the law on vehicle noise.
If your vehicle doesn’t comply with noise laws
If your vehicle doesn’t pass the vehicle noise, you must:
- get your vehicle repaired or modified so it does comply with the law and can pass the noise test
- book and pay for another noise test from an approved vehicle noise tester.
You are not obliged to arrange for repairs from the same mechanic who conducts the noise test.
Certificates of compliance
If you don’t get the certificate of compliance by the due date, EPA can:
- fine you
- suspend your vehicle registration.
While the notice remains outstanding, EPA can also fine you if you sell the vehicle without first obtaining permission from us.
