Report a smoky vehicle

Help to prevent air pollution in Victoria. If you see a vehicle emitting too much smoke, report it to us. Reporting a smoky vehicle helps let drivers know that there may be a problem with the vehicle.

What you can report

Some vehicles, particularly with diesel engines, may emit some smoke under certain driving conditions as part of normal operation – for example, driving uphill. Steam can also look like smoke, especially on cold mornings.

You can report a smoky vehicle to us if it's:

  • emitting smoke continuously for 10 seconds or more
  • less than 4.5 tonnes – for example, motorbikes, cars and vans
  • registered in Victoria.

To report smoke from large trucks and buses over 4.5 tonnes, contact the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.

You should report a smoky vehicle within 14 days.
