If you have received a vehicle testing notice, you must get your vehicle tested and get a certificate of compliance. Visit Book a noisy or smoky vehicle test.
You break the law when you own or use a vehicle that exceeds noise or emission limits. These limits are set out in the Environment Protection Regulations 2021.
You must get a certificate of compliance for your vehicle when directed to. If you do not get a certificate of compliance, we can fine you or suspend your vehicle registration. We can also fine you if you sell the vehicle without getting a certificate of compliance.
Fines to companies are larger than fines to individuals.
