If you have received a vehicle testing notice, you must get your vehicle tested and get a certificate of compliance. Visit Book a noisy or smoky vehicle test.
You break the law when you own or use a vehicle that exceeds noise or emission limits. These limits are set out in the Environment Protection Regulations 2021.
You must get a certificate of compliance for your vehicle when directed to. If you do not get a certificate of compliance, we can:
- fine you and/or
- suspend your vehicle registration.
We can also fine you if you sell the vehicle without getting a certificate of compliance.
What to do if you receive an infringement
If you receive an infringement notice for not providing us a certificate of compliance, you can:
- pay the fine
- apply for an internal review
- request to take your fine to court

Motor vehicle fines
Motor vehicle fines apply to both individuals and companies. Infringement penalty amounts vary depending on who the fine is issued to.
