Major industries assessments

We conduct detailed audit-style and compliance assessments on a range of large, complex industrial sites across Victoria.

On this page

We assess Victoria’s largest and most complex industrial sites. We do this to make sure they've identified and managed their environmental risks to meet their obligations under the general environmental duty.

Many of these sites are critical infrastructure for Victoria and have an EPA licence. They may also have been identified as a major hazard facility (MHF)(opens in a new window) by WorkSafe Victoria and have an MHF licence.

These industrial sites:

  • generate large volumes of waste
  • discharge large volumes of emissions or treated effluent
  • store or process large volumes of chemicals or hazardous materials.

Typical sectors include refineries, power stations and chemical manufacturing.

These large-scale operations have the potential to generate:

  • hazardous and industrial waste
  • pollution
  • contamination.

We work with them to manage these environmental risks.

Assessment process

We select sites for assessment from a range of industrial sectors. If your site is selected for assessment, we contact you to explain and guide you through the process.

To do the assessment, we conduct a detailed review of the site's environmental management systems. We focus on identified environmental risks and associated controls.

This helps us:

  • check that they have implemented appropriate controls to prevent harm to human health and the environment
  • validate that the controls are effective through the monitoring programs.

If the site has a licence, we check that it's complying with its licence conditions and has implemented its risk management and monitoring program.

We address any compliance issues we find by following our Compliance and enforcement policy.
