EPA Victoria has fined a level crossing removal contractor $1,923 for letting its trucks leave muddy tracks on Railway Ave and Patterson St, Ringwood East.
Laing O'Rourke Australia Construction Pty Ltd has been working on the Level Crossing Removal Project at Dublin Rd, but failed to have appropriate controls at the exits of its work site to stop sediment from truck tyres accumulating on the roads.
EPA Victoria Northern Metropolitan Regional Manager Chloe Bernett says there is more to the offence than just a bit of mud on a road.
“Sediment like this can build up in the stormwater system, clogging drains and eventually contaminating nearby creeks, affecting wildlife and Melbourne’s linear parks,” Ms Bernett said.
“It’s a nuisance to the community, it detracts from the look of residential streets and shopping strips, and experienced contractors like this should know better than to let it happen,” she said.
In this case EPA Authorised Officers conducting routine inspections found the sediment on 30 May 2024, but pollution like this is often reported by members of the community.
Any member of the public can report pollution by calling EPA’s 24-hour hotline on 1300 372 842 or providing details online at epa.vic.gov.au/report-pollution/reporting-pollution
