What it contains

The Maribyrnong River has a long history of industrial and port activities and is at the bottom of a catchment with a large urban population. In recent years there has been growing interest in the levels of contaminants present in the water, sediments and fish and whether it is safe to use the river or eat the fish caught recreationally from the river. EPA is conducting an overarching environmental audit of the lower Maribyrnong River, lower Yarra River and Stony Creek Backwash. Also, to determine the level of health risk associated with eating fish caught in the river EPA, in collaboration with other goverment agencies is conducting an extensive study of the levels of contaminants in the flesh of fish caught in the river. Results of the contamination study and the environmental audit will be published at the conclusion.
